The court accepted the charge sheet against 14 people including Nobel laureate economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus in the case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission. The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge As-Shams Jaglul Hossain accepted the charge sheet today.
At the same time, he ordered the transfer of the case to Dhaka Special Judge-4 Court. The court has fixed the date of next hearing of the case on May 2.
Today, Dr. Yunus and other accused came to court around 1:15 p.m. The director of Grameen Telecom, Shahjahan, applied for time without appearing in the court because of his sickness. The court rejected the application for time and issued an arrest warrant.
Dr. in the case, 14 accused including Dr. Muhammad Yunus are on bail. They surrendered to the court on March 3 and applied for bail. The court granted his bail after the hearing. While on bail, he was out of the country to attend a UN function. From there, the Nobel laureate returned to the country on an urgent basis to appear in the case and extend the bail period.
Earlier on February 1, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court ACC Deputy Director Gulshan Anwar filed the charge sheet against 14 people including Yunus.
On May 30 of last year, Grameen Telecom was accused of embezzling Tk. 25 crore 22 lakh 6 thousand 780 from the workers’ welfare fund.
ACC filed a case against 13 people including Dr. Yunus accusing the charge of embezzling money worth 25 crore 22 lakh 6 thousand and 780 taka. Gulshan Anwar, deputy director of the ACC, filed the case as the main plaintiff. There were 13 accused in the ACC case. A new accused has been added to the charge sheet. Apart from Dr. Yunus, the other defendants are – Chairman of Grameen Telecom Dr. Muhammad Yunus, managing director Md. Nazmul Islam, director and former managing director Md. Ashraful Hasan, Director Parveen Mahmud, Nazneen Sultana, Md. Shahjahan, Nurjahan Begum and director S. M. Hazzatul Islam Latifi, Advocate Md. Yusuf Ali, Advocate Zafrul Hasan Sharif, President of Grameen Telecom Sramik-Karmachari Union, Md. Kamruzzaman, general secretary Feroz Mahmud Hasan, office secretary of Sramik-Karmachari union Kamrul Hasan and representative Md. Mainul Islam.
