The 17th anniversary of Jashore University of Science and Technology-JUST has been celebrated with various events including colorful path alpana, cake cutting, pitha festival, research project exhibition, discussion meeting and many more. However, the program of the 17th University Day began on Wednesday at 12.01 pm with the bursting of firecrackers and freeing lanterns.
The official activities of the University Day celebrations started on Thursday morning at 10.15 am with the hoisting of the national flag and JUST flag in front of the administration building. At 10.25 in the morning the JUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain and other guests placed wreaths at the mural of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the main gate of the university. On the occasion of the University Day, a joyous procession started from the main gate at 10.30 am. Students, teachers and staff celebrated University Day by chanting slogans, dancing and singing to the rhythm of musical instruments. After the procession, the university day cake was cut in front of the Administrative Building of the university. After that at 10.45 am by freein balloons and cutting the ribbon, the JUST Vice-Chancellor Prof. Md. Anwar Hossain inaugurated the celebration. After the inauguration, the visiting guests including the JUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain visited the research project exhibition of various departments and labs; Pitha Utsab stalls and path alpanas. The university’s 26 departments and faculties of veterinary medicine named pitha stall Bahari according to the theme of their curriculum. Everyone was amazed to see the array of delicious pithas in the stalls in various shapes, sizes and seasonal variations. Various departments and laboratories showcased research projects on smart waste bins, safe rail gates, low-cost solar dryers, food preservation processes, fish preservation and production processes, research on probiotics, textile products, livestock development and so on.
At 11:30 am, a seminar and discussion meeting on the overall development, achievements and future plans of the university was held in the central gallery. The JUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain was present as the chief guest in the seminar. He said, this university is a science and research university. Along with science lessons, you should learn about the culture and history of your country. Only then you can you be human like humans. Along with class-exams, you have to be cultural minded, you should grasp the culture of the country; only then you can become an enlightened person. He said to the students, ‘You have to be hardworking. It is not necessary to invent something new, it should be brought to the people. So that the people of this country are benefitted.’
Director of Student Counseling and Guidance Office Professor Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain presided over the event while the Treasurer of JUST Prof. Dr. Md. Anishur Rahman, convener of Dean’s Committee Professor Dr. Md. Iqbal Kabir Zahid, Registrar Engineer Md. Ahsan Habib, General Secretary of the teachers’ association Dr. Md. Kamrul Islam, Sub-Registrar Mohammad Emdadul Haque and others on behalf of officials spoke at the seminar and discussion meeting. Besides, Deans, Chairmen, Heads of Departments, teachers-students, officials and employees of various faculties were present in the event. A documentary on ‘Development, Achievements and Future Action Plan’ of the University was screened at the beginning of the program. The program was conducted by the chairman of the English department Dr. Md. Munibur Rahman.
Inauguration of Glass House and JUST School and College
A glass house with modern facilities was inaugurated at the JUST campus in the afternoon to institutionalize biotechnology research. With the inauguration of this modern lab, the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of the University will be able to carry out better quality research. Later JUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain inaugurated a new building of JUST School and College near the main campus of the university. Moreover, the school automation system was also inaugurated. In the afternoon, interesting cultural programs were held in the central playground of the university with the participation of various groups of students.
The university was established on January 25, 2007 in Sajiali Mauza of Churamankati Union of Jashore Sadar Upazila covering an area of 35 acres with the aim of creating opportunities for modern knowledge practice and research through higher education. At present this university has 26 departments under eight faculties. About 6 thousand 213 students are currently studying in this university at the undergraduate, postgraduate, MPhil and PhD levels. A total of 348 teachers, 164 officers of various grades and 338 employees are working in the university, including professors, associate professors, assistant professors and lecturers.
