After a long journey of 16 years, Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST), the first and only public university in the greater Jashore district of southwestern Bangladesh is celebrating its seventeenth anniversary. Fireworks and lanterns were set off at the basketball ground at 12.01 pm on Wednesday night to celebrate the University Day on January 25.
The first phase of the University Day celebrations on Thursday began at 10.15 am with the hoisting of the National Flag and University Flag. The other events are: At 10.25 a.m. wreath-laying at the mural of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by the main gate; at 10.30 a.m. Ananda Shobhajatra, at 10.45 a.m. University Anniversary Day cake cutting, Pitha Utsab. At 11.30 a.m. a seminar and discussion meeting on action planning, overall development, achievements and future of the university has been scheduled at the Central Gallery and an interesting cultural program have been organized with the participation of university students at 3.00 pm. On the occasion of the 17th University Day, Pitha Utsab will be held in front of the Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose Academic Building of the University organized by all departments. Their respective departments will showcase their creativity by decorating different types of pithas.
Apart from this, the main road of the university has been painted with charming Alpana works. The overall supervision of the University Day program is undergoing by the Student Counseling and Guidance Office of the University.
This year’s university day program will be attended by the Ekushey Medalist scientist Vice-Chancellor of Jashore University of Science and Technology Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain.
The university was established on January 25, 2007 in Sajiali Mauza of Churamankati Union of Jessore Sadar Upazila covering an area of 35 acres with the aim of creating opportunities for modern knowledge practice and research through higher education. However, the academic activities of Jashore University of Science and Technology’s started in 2008-09 academic year. All the administrative activities of the university started in a rented house named ‘Bristhi Mahal’ in Dharmatala of Jashore city. In the year 2009, the admission program of 200 students in the departments of ‘Computer Science and Engineering’, ‘Environmental Science and Technology’, ‘Microbiology’ and ‘Fisheries and Marine Bioscience’ was completed in this rented house in 2009. On June 10 of that year, the academic activities started at the main campus with 200 students. Later, the Honorable Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, officially inaugurated the present campus of Jashore University of Science and Technology on December 27, 2010.
At present this university has 26 departments under eight faculties. Besides, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree is offered under the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine situated at Jhenaidah. About 6 thousand 213 students are currently studying in this university at the undergraduate, postgraduate, MPhil and PhD levels. A total of 348 teachers, 164 officers of various grades and 338 employees are working in the university, including professors, associate professors, assistant professors and lecturers. Those who are working tirelessly day and night to make Jashore University of Science and Technology a research-based world-class university through their talent and labor.
