A research seminar and workshop on “Tackling Plastic Pollution for a Sustainable marine Future: A Source to Solution Approach” was held on January 22 (Monday) by the Civil Engineering Department of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET).
The CUET Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Alam was present as the Chief guest of the event while the Dean of the Faculty of Urban and Environmental Strategy and Scientific Expert of SCIP Plastics Project Dr. Sudip Kumar Pal; Head of Department of Civil Engineering Professor Dr. Ayesha Akhtar; Registrar (Additional Charge) Prof. Dr. Sheikh Mohammad Humayun Kabir; Director of Research and Extension Directorate Dr. Sajal Chandra Banik; Professor of Civil Engineering Department Dr. Swapan Kumar Palit and Scientific Expert of SCIP Plastics Project and Professor of Civil Engineering Department Dr. Asiful Haque were present as special guest. Scientific Director of SCIP Plastics Project and Professor of Civil Engineering Department Mosammat Farzana Rahman Juthi presided over the event
Mr. Trisha Das, Research Assistant of SCIP Plastics Project moderated the program. Notably, “SCIP Plastics Project” is a research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
While speaking as the chief guest, Professor Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Alam said, “Currently, there is excessive plastic pollution in the marine area of Bangladesh. About seven hundred species of animals are adversely affected by this pollution. Even some animals are now almost endangered due to this plastic pollution. Under the SCIP Plastics Project under the supervision of CUET researchers, a master plan has been undertaken to assess the feasibility of using jute as an alternative to plastic products. Through which it will be possible to get guidelines to ensure sustainable marine environment in the Bay of Bengal and other coastal areas of the country by reducing the use of plastic waste in the sea and coastal areas.”
