Residents and employees of the Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) blocked the road with the corpse of Md. Mofizur Rahman, a senior driver who tried to commit suicide after being subjected to ‘mental torture’ at work. At that time, the leaders of the employees’ association and the local residents demanded an investigation into the death of Mofizur and the punishment of those who were involved.
When his body reached the area on Tuesday (January 2) night, JUST employees and local residents took the body and stood in front of the main gate of the university. They protested by blocking the road there. Traffic on the Jashore-Chaugachha road came to a standstill during the hour-long blockade. There was a traffic jam on both sides of the road.
Employees association leaders Badruzzaman Badal, Mohammad Shahin, Golam Rasul, former UP member Sabur Hossain etc. spoke demanding investigation into the death of Mofizur and punishment of those involved.
Sources related to JUST said that Mofizur Rahman, the senior driver of the university, was kept idle without any duty for about six months after receiving a complaint about a family case. He was not assigned to drive any vehicle at that time.
Recently, a letter was sent to him to change the ‘job of nature’ and attach him to office work. In addition, there are complaints of harassment against the transport administrator professor Dr. Zafirul Islam. After receiving that letter, Mofizur poured petrol on himself and set himself on fire on the night of December 29 in the mental agony of ‘having to work as a peon’. At that time the family members noticed the fire and took him to Jashore 250 Bed General Hospital. As his condition was serious, he was quickly sent to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka. He died on Monday night (January 1) while undergoing treatment there.
