The Bangladeshi team ‘Robniam Bangladesh’ took the fifth place among the best by participating in the world’s most prestigious robotics competition ‘World Robot Olympiad 2023’ held in Panama. The team of Israfil Shaheen Aranya of Cantonment Public School and College, Rangpur, Qazi Mostahid Labib of Sunnydale and Tafseer Tahreem competed in the Future Innovators (Senior) category and bagged the fifth position among the best.
On the other hand, team ‘MechaScratch_404’ of Notre Dame College’s Abu Nafis Mohammad Noor Rohan and Mahir Tajwar Chowdhury of Mirzapur Cadet College bagged the 11th position among the best participating in the Future Engineers category. Besides, the team of Chowdhury Muhammad Minhatullah of Notre Dame College, Atiqa Binte Amin of Agricultural University College and Hasibuzzaman Bhuiyan of Will’s Little Flower School and College participated in the ‘Bite Bandits’ Future Innovators (Senior) category and secured 16th place among the best.
451 teams from 77 countries participated in the main competition in the 20th edition of the three-day Olympiad, which began on November 7 in Panama. The organizers believe that this year’s achievement will encourage Bangladeshi students to participate in this international competition in the future.
Sajjad Islam, a graduate student of Stanford University, was selected as a judge from Bangladesh this year at the World Robot Olympiad. This time Redwan Ferdous was the team leader of the Bangladesh teams and Maherul Azam Qureshi was the deputy team leader. Besides, Taasif Samin was the coach of team ‘Mechascratch_404’.
Before this, the ‘World Robot Olympiad-2023 National Episode of Bangladesh’ was held at the National Science and Technology Complex in the capital last September. The sponsor of the national event was Augmedix Bangladesh. The Olympiad was organized by the Bangladesh Science and Technology Museum and the Bangladesh Open Source Network in collaboration with Stanford University’s Hatch Center. Bangladesh team was formed for World Robot Olympiad by selecting the best students from among the winners. A total of eight contestants from three teams participated in this year’s international competition.
Bangladesh became a member of World Robot Olympiad in 2020. Bangladesh is the 25th Asian and 84th global member of WRO. In 2021, participating in the event held online for the first time, Bangladesh finished tenth among the best. 200 teams from 66 countries around the world participated. The next year in 2022, Bangladesh won the eighth place along with the bronze medal, competing with more than three hundred competitors from 375 teams from 73 countries around the world.
