Two extortionists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have been accused of brutally torturing a student named Ismail Hossain for five hours in Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) for demanding donations. His classmates rescued Ismail in an unconscious state from a room of Shaheed Moshiur Rahman Hall of the university yesterday at around 6:30 pm. Around 10:30 pm, he was admitted to Jashore’s 250-bed General Hospital.
The victim Ismail Hossain is a fourth-year student of JUST’s Department of Nutrition and Food Technology and son of Abdul Mannan of Balrampur village in Mymensingh.
The accused are Salman M Rahman, a fourth-year computer science and technology student, and Soheb Ali, an expelled student of the same department. They are residents of room number 528 and known as followers of Sohel Rana, president of the university branch Chhatra League. In the meantime, it has been decided to temporarily expel Salman M. Rahman said the provost of Shaheed Mashiur Rahman Hall. Md. Ashrafuzzaman Zahid. On the other hand, Soheb Ali was earlier expelled for disorderly conduct and consumption of ganja.
Students say that Ismail lives in a hostel at Palbari Vaskarya More in Jashore city. Soheb Ali and Salman M. Rahman were demanding two lakh takas from Ismail at different times. When Ismail did not want to pay the extortion money, the two called him to the hall yesterday afternoon during class in the department. After that, Ismail was tied and beaten with rods, pipes and belts from 2 pm to 6 pm. Later in the evening, his classmates rescued him and gave him first aid at the university. Later that night, when his condition worsened, he was admitted to Jessore General Hospital.
Al Zubair Roni, a master’s student in the university’s Agro Product Processing Technology (APPT) department, said Ismail is not affiliated with any political party. He was not available since Sunday afternoon. Even his phone was switched off. He was fasting. They were looking for him since it was iftar time.
Classmates said that Salman and Soheb of the hall called Ismail during the class. Ismail was not found since then. At that time, classmates went to the hall and found him lying unconscious in room number 528. First, he was given first aid in the campus and later admitted to Jashore General Hospital as his condition worsened.
The students said that room number 528 has accommodation for six people, but BCL workers Soheb and Salman live there. Even after Soheb was expelled for consuming drugs and creating disorder in the campus, he was a regular resident of the hall under the influence of the Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling party Awami League. Earlier, the students also accused these two of demanding extortions under the title of ordinary students’ camp. Both of them are followers of Sohel Rana, president of the Chhatra League of the university branch.
