The Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar said that every effort is being made to prevent any propaganda against sectarianism, terrorism, militancy and liberation war, rumor mongering or anything that disturbs the security of individuals, society and the state through all social media including Facebook. And he strongly urged Facebook to take effective initiatives in these matters.
Facebook’s Bangladesh affairs officer Sabnaz Rashid Dia had a courtesy meeting with the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications at his office in the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday. At the time, he expressed concern about the promotion of gambling advertisements on Facebook.
The minister said, ‘The unstable situation is a big challenge not only for the society or the state, but also for Facebook’.
However, following the first meeting with Facebook authorities in Barcelona in 2018, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications expressed optimism about the continuous development of relations in the last 5 years. This pioneer of digital technology development mentioned that social media is a part of daily life and said, edited news is published in national news media but any status is published on social media which can range from personal attacks to social and communal provocations which are harmful to the country and nation. Mentioning the importance of keeping the country and nation safe, the minister said that this is a big challenge.
Urging Facebook to take more effective initiatives to face this challenge, this innovator of Bengali language in digital technology suggested making the user interfaces easier for common people. Sabnaz Rashid Dia said, other countries’ policies, laws and the context of Bangladesh are very different, we are careful about harmful content. Our policy also repeatedly states to be aware of risky content from the government. We have also taken measures in that light. She said that Facebook has regular meetings with BTRC and maintains daily communication which they will continue.
