The death of Fardin Noor Parash, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) has been claimed as ‘suicide’ by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. RAB is also saying the same thing. In view of this claim, BUET students went to the organization’s office on Minto Road in the capital on Thursday (December 15) at the request of DB to see ‘evidences of suicide’. There, they held a two-hour discussion with Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Intelligence Branch (DB) Additional Commissioner Mohammad Haroon Or Rashid. During the discussion, they learned the details of the DB’s investigation into ‘evidence of suicide’. Then they commented as, ‘There are some gaps in some places, there are some ambiguities and obscurities. There is a need to be even clearer about these.’
However, the students expressed their satisfaction with the activities of DB.
After the discussion with the DB officials, BUET student Tahmid Hossain said, ‘They have shown us the signs of the DB investigation. The signs seem relevant to us. It seems that they have put a lot of ‘effort’ behind them. But there may be some gaps in some places, there are some spots. There is a need to be clearer about these. I hope they will do more work on these in the future. They have given us an assurance in this regard.’
Tahmid Hossain also said, ‘There is a gap: from the side of the bridge where he was taken down, from the one who backed in the middle, it is not clear who was with him at that place or whether he was completely alone or not. The lagoona driver said that the two were dropped off. Another person came down with him. It is not clear that who got off with him. Apart from this, they have shown concrete evidence of other things to an extent. They have shown us some circumstantial evidence, which makes the incident appear to be a suicide. But they did not show such concrete, solid information. Whether or not the motive for suicide can be fully ascertained can be worked on in the future. DB said they will work on it.’
Tahmid said that the next position of the students will be informed in this matter after discussing with others back at BUET.
Earlier, on Wednesday, the DB, investigating the incident of Fardin’s unusual death, said that he had committed suicide. DB also mentioned some of the reasons behind ‘suicide’. On the same day, RAB’s Law and Media Branch Director Commander Khandaker Al Moin claimed that Fardin voluntarily committed suicide by jumping from the Sultana Kamal Bridge into the Shitalakshya River.
This RAB official said, considering all relevant evidence including CCTV footage, digital footprints, and our investigation has revealed that Fardin, a BUET student, voluntarily jumped into the river from Sultana Kamal Bridge and died.
It may be recalled that the Naval Police recovered the body of Fardin Noor from Shitalakshya River in Narayanganj at around 6 pm on November 7. In this incident, a case was registered in Rampura police station against unknown persons including girlfriend Bushra on the charge of ‘killing and disappearing the body’. Fardin’s father Noor Uddin Rana filed the case as a plaintiff. After the case, Bushra was arrested from a house in Rampura area of the capital on the charge of killing Fardin Noor Parsh and disappearing the body on November 10. DB Police is investigating the case. In the investigation, the DB informed about the suicide of Fardin.
