12 students saved themselves from the danger by calling 999 after getting stuck in a trawler while roaming in a Haor of Kishoreganj. Among them, 10 are students of Dhaka University and two are students of Gurudayal Government College.
Chamra Naval Police rescued them from the submerged area of Gopdighi Union of Mithamain Upazila of the district and sent them safely to their destination.
Sub-inspector in charge of the Naval Police outpost of Chamraghat Md. Enamul Haque said that some female students were also in the boat. At one point two students jumped from the boat in fear. They were also afraid that robbers may attack when they saw flashlights searching around them. At that time, a student called 999 and asked the police for help in rescuing them. The matter was reported to the naval police outpost in Karimganj. After receiving the information, a police team led by him tried for about an hour and found the location of the students’ boat around 12 midnight. Around one in the night they were rescued and brought to Kishoreganj district headquarters.
SI Mohammad Enamul Haque also said that the students told the police that they were in fear of being attacked by dacoits. However, there was no attack on their boat.
On Thursday after noon, 14 students went for a walk on the All-weather road in Haor area (vast seasonal waterbody). They hired a trawler from Balikhola of Karimganj upazila and went down to Mithamain and roamed on All-weather road. On their way back from there in the evening, they were hit by a wave. At night, the trawler carrying them got stuck in low water near Hasanpur bridge of Mithamain upazila. At that time, they started screaming out of fear, but they were not getting any help.
When a student of Dhaka University was contacted in this regard, he confirmed the the incident as true. However, none of the students agreed to give details about this.
