Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mostafa Jabbar said the roadmap for digitalizing the post office was ready as a facilitator of digital commerce. He said that in order to establish a postal system suitable for the digital age, the roadmap of post office digitization is being prepared. In addition to digitizing the postal system, we have started the work of digitizing the post office by imparting digital skills to 45,000 employees.
At the same time, the Minister called upon all concerned to work with more devotion and sincerity with a spirit of service to make the ongoing program of making the post office fit to meet the huge demand for merchandise delivery successful.
Minister of Posts and Telecommunications made the call while addressing as the chief guest at the farewell reception of the outgoing Director General of the Department of Posts Siraj Uddin on Monday night at the Dhaka GPO auditorium,
Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Md. Khalilur Rahman was present as special guest on the occasion. Additional Director General of the Postal Department Harun Ur Rashid presided over the function while Additional Director General Reazul Islam, former Postmaster General Bahija Akter, PMG of Khulna Range Md. Shamsul Alam and Director of the Postal Department SM Harunur Rashid spoke on the occasion.
Additional Secretary of Posts and Telecommunications Md. Mahbub-ul-Alam was present at the program.
“Our big challenge was to put the distressed postal service in a better position as the era of postal correspondence came to an end,” he said. We have already achieved that. The post office for e-commerce has now become a reliable institution. Noting that no other organization in the country has the huge infrastructure and manpower as the post offices across the country have; the minister said that there is no alternative to the post office to deliver the essential commodities ranging from frozen food to the remote and inaccessible areas. Highlighting the contribution of the postal service in delivering medical equipment ranging from transporting fruits and vegetables to the farmers during the Covid-19 pandemic, the minister said that the post office was not closed even for a day due to emergency services. Referring to various initiatives taken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the development of the postal system, the Minister said, the proposal of Digital Service Design Lab (DSDL) to make the post office suitable for the digital age is a historic milestone in the establishment of digital post office. This has laid the foundation for the digitization of productive activities. The Minister expressed strong hope that the postal service would be upgraded to the desired level through the implementation of this master plan prepared by the concerned experts including the officials of the Postal Department. Mr. Mostafa Jabbar, a pioneer in the development of digital technology, lauded the role of the outgoing Director General Siraj Uddin in implementing the initiative to digitize the post office. He hopes that the next Director General will successfully carry out the work of the outgoing Director General. He wished Siraj Uddin good health and long life.
The Secretary Posts and Telecommunications called upon the concerned to work tirelessly for the successful implementation of the action plan adopted for the establishment of an advanced postal service through digitalization of the post office. He appreciated the efforts of the outgoing Director General and wished him good health and long life.
The outgoing Director General shared some memorable memories of his long career. He lauded the visionary thinking of the Hon’ble Minister as a true guardian to digitalize the post office during his tenure as Director General and the program adopted in his light.
