Through ensuring customer satisfaction, Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL), a state-owned telecommunications company is not only gaining popularity but also going to be free from losses gradually. Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mostafa Jabbar’s challenge is to make profit within this year, by compensating the loss of Tk 18 crore in the last quarter (January-March 2022).
BTCL has made a profit of around Tk. 250 crore this quarter. Of this, the revenue from the Operation sector has been 201 crore. As a result, the company’s loss has come down to 9 crore.
The Minister of Posts and Telecommunications thanked Dr. Rafiqul Matin, Managing Director, BTCL for this achievement. Encouraging him, he said, “I hope there will be no losses in the next quarter. Let’s start making profit in the next quarter.”
Since taking over as Managing Director of BTCL, he has been able to attract new services and business partners and customers. As a result, he is now heading towards making profit by offsetting the company’s losses by implementing the steps taken. While asked about this achievement, Dr. Rafiqul Matin said, “If Allah bestows His blessings, we will be able to reduce the loss to zero in the next quarter. This has been possible for being able to work independently and especially for the support of our Minister and the tireless cooperation of my colleagues.”
It may be noted that, the loss of BTCL in the financial year 2018-19 was Tk. 424 crores. After taking charge in 2019-21, the current BTCL managing director Dr. Rafiqul Matin could manage to reduce this loss to Tk. 345 crores. In the FY 2020-21, BTCL’s loss came down to Tk. 240 crores as the loss reduction continued unabated. In the first quarter of the fiscal year 2021-22, the loss dropped to 152 crores, 27 crore in the second quarter and 9 crore in the last third quarter.
In other words, the current board of directors of BTCL under the leadership of Dr. Rafiqul Matin has been able to meet the loss of Tk. 415 crores through business growth. As a result, the company is hopeful that the next quarter, the loss will be reduced to zero.
