This time the admission test for the first year of graduation of 2021-22 academic year will be held in two stages at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). The initial stage of the admission test will be held on June 4 and the final examination will be held on June 18 with those who have passed the preliminary stage. On that day, the final admission test of BUET will be held in two shifts from 10 am to 12 noon and from 2 pm to 3:30 pm.
However, a writ petition has been filed in the High Court challenging the validity of the changed admission eligibility of the aggrieved students. The vice-chancellor, registrar and secretary of the Ministry of Education have been named as defendants in the writ petition. In the public interest, the relevant branch of the High Court on Tuesday (April 19) Supreme Court lawyer Md. Yunus Ali Akand filed the writ petition. According to the writ petition, the condition of getting 93 percent marks in BUET is in conflict with Articles 27 (3) and 31 of the Constitution.
The High Court bench of Justice Md. Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Khizir Hayat is scheduled to hear the writ petition on Thursday.
The writ also challenges BUET’s policy of taking admission test for 20,000 applicants this year. In his application, he requested the High Court to suspend the advertisement of BUET published in the daily Prothom Alo on April 16.
It is learned that in BUET admission test, an average of 90 marks was required in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. However, this time 93 marks have been sought in Physics and Chemistry with an average score of 85 in Mathematics. That is why many meritorious students are being deprived of the opportunity to sit for the admission test. Some people are not able to take part in the admission test as they have less than one or two marks on average. This writ has been filed in this regard.
Citing the petition, the lawyer Yunus Ali Akand said that according to the advertisement, a student has to get 372 marks out of a total of 400 marks in Physics and Chemistry in HSC or equivalent examination for admission in BUET. This means that you have to get 93 percent marks in these two subjects, which is unreasonable and conflicts with the grade point average (GPA). Therefore, this unpleasant ad should be declared invalid.
It can be noted that, the HSC and equivalent examination of 2021 was postponed due to the closure of class-examination in Covid19 pandemic situation. That is why examinations in Physics, Chemistry and Biology were taken in short syllabus and by reducing the examination time and number. Results are given by mapping numbers on SSC-equivalent and JSC-equivalent results in other subjects.
That is why the Minister of Education Dr. Dipu Moni suggested to take the university admission tests in the short syllabus of 2021-22 academic year. In view of this, the authorities decided to take the admission test of BUET in a short syllabus.
