This year International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is taking part in Japan with more than 500 contestants from more than 100 countries including Bangladesh. The International Mathematical Olympiad 2023 will begin with the opening phase on July 7 in Chiba, Japan and end with the final phase on July 12. The Bangladesh mathematics team is going to Japan on Wednesday (July 5) night to participate in the 64th edition of the event. Bangladesh is participating in IMO for the 19th time.
Bangladesh Mathematics Olympiad Committee held a press conference at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in the capital on Tuesday afternoon to announce this news.
Bangladesh Mathematics Olympiad committee member Professor Dr. Mohammad Kaykobad introduced the six members of the Bangladesh team. The Bangladesh team members are—SMA Nahian (Dhaka College), Shahriar Hossain (RCCI Public School and College, Rangpur), Nuzhat Ahmed Disha (Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, Dhaka), Jitendra Barua (Ispahani Public School and College, Chattogram). , Debapriya Saha Roy (Ananda Mohan College, Mymensingh) and Imad Uddin Ahmad Hasin (Kushtia Government College).
It was informed at the press conference, the team leader of these six contestants, the coach of the Bangladesh Math team Dr. Mahbub Majumdar arrived in Japan yesterday on July 3 according to the rules and faction leader, former member of Bangladesh Maths team, silver medalist Noor Mohammad Shafiullah will come to Japan from the United States and join the team on July 6, and observer Math Olympiad coordinator Md. Bayezid Bhuiyan will leave Bangladesh at midnight tomorrow (July 5) along with six students.
In a written speech at the press conference, Professor Mohammad Kaykobad, a member of the Bangladesh Mathematics Olympiad Committee, said that our students have so far won 1 gold, 7 silver and 32 bronze medals and 38 honorable mentions in the International Mathematics Olympiad. The Dutch-Bangla Bank-Prothom-alo Mathematics Festival, which started more than 18 years ago, has now become the life festival of the students of the country.
Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited Managing Director Abul Kashem said in the press conference. Shirin, Prothom Alo Managing Secretary Anisul Haque and Bangladesh Mathematics Olympiad Committee General Secretary Munir Hasan spoke.
It was informed in the press conference that about 45 thousand students had registered online for the Mathematics Festival organized to select members of the Bangladesh Mathematics Team for this year’s IMO. First Online Selection Olympiad with registered students and Regional Math Festival held in 20 cities with winners of Selection Olympiad. Winners of Regional Maths Olympiad were held with 10245 students in National Festival and 85 winners of National Festival.
Later, the National Mathematics Camp was first organized with the best 40 students from among the winners of the National Festival. Later, based on the results of the National Mathematics Camp, Asian-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad and IMO Selection Examination, the coach of the Bangladesh Mathematics Team Dr. Mahbub Majumder recommended a six-member Bangladesh team. The Bangladesh Math Olympiad Committee selected six members of the Bangladesh National Math Team for the 64th International Math Olympiad as per the coach’s recommendation.

- Nahyan became the Champion of the Champions in the secondary category at the National Mathematics Olympiad held in 2022 and 2023. This student is participating in IMO for the second time. Last year for the first time participating in the IMO received honorable recognition. His father Md. Nurul Amin is a jobber and mother Shahnaz Begum is a teacher. He likes to read books. He is the younger of two siblings. He pass his leisure period by playing chess or listening to music. He wants to pursue higher education in computer science when he grows up.
Shahriar Hossain, RCCI Public School and College, Rangpur
- Shahriar won the junior category in 2020. This student is participating in IMO for the first time. Father Md. Mostak Hossain is a jobber and mother Farida Yasmin is a teacher. He is the eldest of two brothers and sisters. Wants to pursue higher education in computer science when he grows up. He likes to read books. He likes to read history in spare time.
Nuzhat Ahmed Disha, Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, Dhaka
- Nuzhat stood 2nd in secondary category and 1st in girls in National Mathematics Olympiad held in 2022 and became champion in 2023. Nuzhat wants to take higher education in mathematics. This student is participating in IMO for the third time. She has participated in the IMO twice and achieved honorable recognition. She likes sports, reading and traveling. Father Ismail Ahmed Bhuiyan is a businessman and mother Musammat Nasima Akhtar is a teacher. She is the youngest of four siblings. She won silver medals at the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) in 2021 and 2023 and a bronze medal in 2022.
Jitendra Barua, Ispahani Public School and College, Chittagong
- Jitendra was the champion of National Mathematics Olympiad in 2020 and 2021, second runner-up in 2022. This student is participating in IMO for the first time. Father Samaresh Barua is a jobber and mother Tumpa Barua is a housewife. Jitendra wants to pursue higher studies in computer science. Hobbies are programming, reading and listening to music. Research topics and play strategic games to learn new things or develop intelligence in leisure time. He is the eldest of two brothers and sisters.
Debapriya Saha Roy, Anand Mohan College, Mymensingh
- Debapriya won the Gauranga Dev Roy Memorial Award in 2022 as the 1st runner-up in the National Mathematics Olympiad and second in the secondary category in 2023. This student is participating in IMO for the first time. Father Sumant Kumar Saha Roy is a teacher and mother Ruby Rani Roy Chowdhury is a housewife. Hobbies are singing and playing cricket. Debapriya likes to read books and listen to music in his spare time. He is the younger of two siblings. When she grows up, she wants to study math/computer science.
Imad Uddin Ahmad Hasin, Kushtia Government College
- Imad became champion of National Mathematics Olympiad in 2022 and 1st runner-up in 2023. Father Moinuddin Ahmed is a teacher and mother Tanuja Akhtar is a housewife. He is the youngest of three siblings. This student is participating in IMO for the first time. His hobbies are traveling to new places and reading books. He likes to play chess, solve Rubik’s cube, watches movie series in leisure time. Imad wants to study computer science when he grows up.
