As an effect of mass layoffs, there aren’t enough workers to man the sprawling offices of two social tech giants, Facebook’s parent company Meta and Microsoft. And most of those who are there are working from home.
In such a situation, two tech giants have decided to rent their own office space. Meta and Microsoft have begun vacating office buildings in Seattle and Bellevue, Washington state.
According to the Seattle Times report, all of Facebook’s offices in downtown Seattle, Washington state, have been leased. The list of leased offices also includes the six-storey Arbor Block 333 in downtown and the 11-storey office in the Spring District in Bellevue.
Meta spokeswoman Tracy Clayton said the office space is being rented because employees are working from home. He also acknowledged the economic crisis.
Clayton also said Meta still has offices in 29 buildings and about 8,000 employees in the Seattle area, which is the company’s second-largest engineering hub outside its headquarters in Menlo Park, California.
Microsoft’s City Center Plaza in Bellevue is also being leased within walking distance. It is believed that the recession with ‘home offices’ and massive layoffs has left the two organizations in this state.
Meta laid off 726 workers from its Seattle office in November last year. Apart from this, Meta also announced the layoff of a total of 11,000 employees of the company.
