Eminent Professor of Archeology Dr. Enamul Haq is no more (Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun). He was 85 years old. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Science and Technology Minister Architect Yafesh Osman expressed grief over his death. He was an archeologist who had been awarded with the highest recognitions of Bangladesh, Swadhinota Puroshkar (Freedom Award) and Ekushey Padak (Ekushey Meddel).
In a condolence message on Sunday (July 10th), Minister Yafesh Osman wished salvation to the departed soul and extended his deepest condolences to his bereaved family members.
Dr. Enamul Haque died at his home in the capital on Sunday afternoon. A colleague of Dr. Enamul Haque (Research Fellow) Saiful Islam said that he went to bed at noon after supervising all the work regarding Qurbani (animal sacrifice) from the morning of Eid. He did not respond while sleeping and was taken to United Hospital and was declared as dead.
It is learned that the corpse of Enamul Haque will be kept in the cold storage of BIRDEM Hospital. When her daughter returns from abroad next Tuesday (July 12), a decision will be made about burial.
Enamul Haque was born on 1 March 1937 in Bogra. He holds a Masters Degree in History and Archeology from Dhaka University and a PhD in South Asian Arts from Oxford University, UK. Enamul Haque joined the then Dhaka Museum in 1962. After the independence of Bangladesh, when the Dhaka Museum was transformed into the Bangladesh National Museum, he joined as the founding director general. He made an impeccable contribution from his position. Dr. Enamul Haque was awarded the highest civilian honor, the Swadhinota Puroshkar (Freedom Award), in 2020. Earlier in 2017, he received the Ekushey Padak. He was also awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
