Short video sharing platform TikTok has filed a case against the US government. The suit was originally filed in the United States challenging a law passed to ban the Chinese-owned app. News BBC.
TikTok filed this case on Tuesday (May 7). The lawsuit claims that banning TikTok would seriously curtail the freedom of speech of the 170 million users in the United States.
Because of this case, the issue of national security and freedom of speech of the United States must be resolved in the Supreme Court. In the case, Tik Tok mentioned that banning this popular medium would violate the First Amendment of the Constitution.
The US administration fears that the private information of US citizens is going to the Chinese through TikTok. For this reason, on April 23, the upper house of the US Congress, the Senate, passed the related bill. The next day, on April 24, US President Joe Biden signed the bill. As a result, it becomes law.
According to this law, within the next 9 months, the Chinese company will sell TikTok to a company in the United States, otherwise, the TikTok app will be blocked in the United States. The US will take an additional three months to implement the ban. In that case, TikTok is getting time until the middle of 2025.
However, a day after Joe Biden signed the law, ByteDance announced that they would not be selling TikTok. If necessary, the legal battle will continue.
