India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has banned 18 OTT apps for showing excessively obscene content. All websites and social media directly on this OTT platform are blocked. A total of 19 websites, 10 apps and 57 social media accounts of all these platforms across India have been closed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The decision was taken by the Ministry under the Information Broadcasting Act, Indian Penal Code and Outrage of Women’s Modesty Act. It is known that out of these 18 OTTs, 7 apps were in the Google Play Store, 3 were in the Apple App Store. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur repeatedly reminded platforms of their responsibility not to promote nudity, indecency. And based on that word, Anurag Thakur came to this hard decision on 12 March 2024.
Blocked OTT platforms include – Dreams Films, Voovi, Yessma, Uncut Adda, Tri Flicks, X Prime, Neon X VIP, Besharams, Hunters, Rabbit, Xtramood, Nuefliks, MoodX, Mojflix, Hot Shots VIP, Fugi, Chikooflix and Prime Play. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said that some of the content on these platforms showed obscenity, nudity, and insulted women.
