Currently, Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications have government approvals or required licenses to provide satellite broadband services. However, Starlink, a long-time SpaceX-owned company, is trying to become a part of the Indian connectivity ecosystem. However, due to non-approval, Starlink is yet to start services in India. However, it is known that the company has already received permission to provide satellite internet services in India.
According to a Livemint report, Starlink has recently been given permission to offer satellite broadband services in India. The R.D.O. Department of Telecommunications has granted the ‘Global Mobile Personal Communications’ (GMPCS) license to Starlink.
Even with the GMPCS license, Starlink will have to overcome some regulatory hurdles before it can offer commercial services. It may be noted that the company wanted to provide satellite services in India from 2022. However, due to approvals, Starlink could not provide its satellite services till now.
