Banglalink, one of the leading digital communications service providers in the country, has acquired 4.4 MHz spectrum in 1800 MHz band and 5 MHz spectrum in 2100 MHz band following successful bids at an auction organized by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). The newly acquired spectrum will help Banglalink increase its total spectrum holding from 30.6 MHz to 40 MHz, enabling it to retain the top position among all private operators in Bangladesh in terms of the amount of spectrum provided per subscriber. Banglalink will have to invest around BDT 1000 crore to purchase the spectrum, which is one of the largest investments made by an operator in the country in recent times.
Excited about acquiring the spectrum, Erik Aas, Chief Executive Officer, Banglalink said, “Banglalink’s acquisition of this additional spectrum is yet another landmark in our endeavor to serve our customers as a digital service provider. With the Ookla® certified fastest mobile network in the country for the year 2020, we are maintaining impressive performances and have made significant improvements in key indicators such as the market share, data revenue and data customer base. The spectrum we are acquiring today will also help us capitalize on this success and increase customer satisfaction further. I want to thank our customers for staying with Banglalink and encouraging us to move forward with new visions and objectives.”
Banglalink also purchased a total of 10.6 MHz spectrum at an auction held in 2018, which was the highest amount of spectrum sold to a participating operator that time. Recently, Banglalink has been declared as the fastest mobile network in the country by Ookla® for its mobile network performance during H1-H2 2020. The increased spectrum holding will enable Banglalink to maintain network superiority and bolster its efforts for nationwide 4G expansion.
