A man named Md. Al-Amin has been arrested on charges of attempting to commit arson at the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC) Secretariat in Agargaon, Dhaka. The PSC suspects that the incident was an effort to destroy critical data, including information on ongoing examinations and recruitments.
The incident occurred on Monday (January 6) at around 1:00 PM, when PSC staff caught Al-Amin red-handed. He was later handed over to the police in the afternoon.
The PSC filed a report under Section 154 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. Subsequently, a case was registered, and Al-Amin was formally arrested.
Al-Amin, approximately 39 years old, is a resident of a rented house in Ibrahimpur, under Kafrul Police Station in Dhaka.
Following the incident, PSC Chairman Professor Dr. Mobassher Monem instructed all officials, employees, and security personnel, including police and Ansar, to remain vigilant.
According to a press release issued on Tuesday (January 7) by PSC’s Public Relations Officer, S.M. Matiur Rahman, the intruder attempted to cut a thick electric cable secured with a plastic cover in the underground garage of the secretariat. The act was noticed by security officer Arifur Rahman, who shouted “thief, thief,” alerting others in the building, who then apprehended the suspect.
The PSC suspects that the intruder aimed to carry out an act of sabotage similar to previous fires by damaging the electric cables, which could potentially trigger a fire.
The statement added, “It is suspected that the individual entered the underground with the intention of causing sabotage, such as an arson attack, by damaging the live electric cables. This act appears to have been an attempt to destroy vital data related to ongoing examinations and recruitments stored in the Bangladesh Public Service Commission.”
The PSC further stated, “If important information in the PSC is destroyed, it could create controversies regarding many recruited or promoted candidates.”
