Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Haque said, the government is vigilant about stopping misuse of the Digital Security Act. At the same time, it is discussing the good practice of the law in different countries of the world. Besides, civil society representatives are also being consulted about the law.
Law Minister Anisul Haque shared the stance of the government with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Tark during a courtesy call on Tuesday in Geneva. Md. Sufiur Rahman, Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Bangladesh appointed to the United Nations in Geneva was present at the time.
In the meeting, Law Minister Anisul Haque informed the High Commissioner about working closely with the United Nations Human Rights Council Office on the Digital Security Act, and the misuse of this Act has reduced a lot due to the effective initiatives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.
The Law Minister said that the Bangladesh government is working to enact the Data Protection Act to ensure data protection. Stating that a draft of the proposed law has been published recently, the law minister said that the government is consulting various stakeholders on the law. In the meeting, the High Commissioner highlighted the various activities of his office on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and sought the full cooperation of the Government of Bangladesh in this regard.
In the meeting, the Law Minister expressed a strong commitment to work together with the United Nations to protect and promote human rights in Bangladesh. At the same time, he called for the United Nations to play a stronger and more effective role in making the efforts to repatriate the Rohingyas a success.
