What people search on Google throughout the year, has always been presented by Google in its annual report. Google released their annual ‘Year in Search’ report this year, where games topped war, celebrity or news. Global average users were more interested in Wordle, India vs England cricket match and Ukraine than Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II.
Queen Elizabeth II held the throne of the United Kingdom for 70 years and 214 days until she breathed her last at the age of 96 on September 8. But according to Google’s report, despite being a little more than a year old, throughout 2022, the Internet users were more curious about the video game created by American software engineer Josh Wardle. By writing the name of the game ‘Wordle’, users all over the world have searched the internet the most times.
Ever since the New York Times bought the rights to the game in February of this year, the search for the game has been on the rise. The game, which was launched in 2021, has been able to attract ordinary Internet users due to the simplicity of the game, writes the BBC. According to sources, the main achievement of Wardle’s ‘year in search’ report is its gamers. The game has become so popular that desperate gamers have tried to find answers using Google’s search engine.
Seven of the top ten words that Internet users searched for meaning this year were Wordle’s answers. Wordle is basically a word-in-the-blank game. Gamers get a total of six chances to hit the ‘Word of the Day’. Gamers have to guess a five-letter word each time; and the word remains the same for all.
Meanwhile, the most searched on Google in the news section is about Ukraine. Then there is the news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death. It was the second highest trending topic of the year. In addition to the ‘global search’ list, Ukraine was followed by Queen Elizabeth II in the list of most searched news reports. The third highest search term in the news category was ‘election results’. The next two subjects were Powerball Numbers and ‘Monkeypox’.
While the major events of the year influenced web searches, none of them overtook entertainment. Actor Johnny Depp was the most searched celebrity on Google this year. The issue of defamation case with his ex-wife Amber Heard is the hot topic of the year. And so Amber Heard is the third most searched person on Google. But the second place belongs to star Will Smith. The star made headlines for slapping comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars. And in third place is Johnny Depp’s ex-wife Amber Heard.
‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ topped the list of most searched movies of 2022. Then there are two films ‘Black Adam’ and ‘Top Gun’. In terms of TV shows, Euphoria series is at the top.
And among the top three most searched athletes in the world are the three tennis stars Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams. The top search query is, ‘What is NATO?’
