An office assistant named Tajul Islam has been arrested for allegedly stabbing and injuring five teachers of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science & Technology University (HSTU) in Dinajpur.
This incident happened in the office room of the Civil Engineering Department of the university on Wednesday (November 16) in the morning. Tajul was temporarily suspended by the university authorities after the incident.
Injured teachers are Associate Professor of Civil Engineering Department Md. Belal Hossain, Assistant Professor and Department Chairman Md. Roknuzzaman, lecturer Nirmal Chandra Roy, lecturer Harun Ar Rashid and newly appointed lecturer Md. Mahbubur Rahman. They have been admitted to M. Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital in Dinajpur.
Bandages on the hands and heads of the injured teachers can be seen on the ground in the hospital. The doctor said that they had a lot of blood loss. There are marks of injury and trauma on the body.
Injured teacher Belal Hossain said, ‘Tajul often misbehaved with teachers. But we did not take into account. This morning I was in my chamber with 5 teachers. I wanted to know the reason why Tajul came late to the office. During this time he started talking aggressively and shouting. Tajul behaved like this on many occasions before. So we were going to write a complaint against him to the administration. Enraged by this, he brought a mug from the office and hit the new lecturer Mahbubur Rahman, who had joined today, on the head. The lecturer Nirmal was also hit when he tried to stop him. Then he hit Lecturer Harun and me. Finally, Tajul hit assistant professor Roni.
He further said, ‘Tajul kept chasing us with sharp weapons and glasses saying he would kill us. We came out of the office panicking. Later we were admitted to the hospital with the help of other teachers of the faculty. The incident of such attack on the teachers of the department is disgusting. We want exemplary punishment for him.’
Meanwhile, when the news of the attack on the teachers spread, the students of the engineering faculty burst into anger. While Tajul was taken to the university proctor’s car, the angry students surrounded the car in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence and staged a sit-in in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s house demanding appropriate punishment. The angry students also locked the academic building of the engineering faculty. During the sit-in, Tajul was prevented by the students when the law and order forces wanted to take him into custody. Law and order forces were forced to leave HSTU campus in that situation. Later, the accused Tajul was handed over to the police through an agreement between the students and the university administration.
In this incident, Tajul was temporarily suspended by the administration according to the University Act. After investigating the incident, measures will be taken for his permanent dismissal within three days, said Dean of Engineering Faculty Dr. Sajjat Hossain Sarkar.
University proctor professor Dr. Mamunur Rashid said, ‘We will take maximum punishment against Tajul from the university administration. He has already been temporarily expelled from the university administration. University administration will decide on permanent expulsion subject to investigation.’
In this regard, the vice-chancellor of HSTU Dr. M Kamruzzaman said, “We have taken all possible measures according to the law of the university in the incident of attack on five teachers.”
Dinajpur Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Iftekhar Hossain said that the accused Tajul is in police custody. The university administration filed a case of attempted murder against him in connection with the attack on the teachers.
