Election Commissioner Md. Alamgir said that if there is evidence of any type of manipulation in the electronic voting machine (EVM) in the election, there will be no vote in the EVM.
He commented so, while talking to reporters at his office at the Election Commission building in Agargaon on Monday (August 29). He said, we have taken into account those who have discussed and given opinions about EVM. BNP did not even come to the discussion. We reviewed and found that most of the negotiators were in favor of EVMs.
When asked about the recent statement made by the Sushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujon)-Citizen for Good Governance on ‘Manipulation in EVM’, EC Alamgir said whoever said it has to give evidence. If he wants to come to us, wants to know, we will answer. If he can provide proof (of tampering in EVM), then I will cancel the idea. Beyond that, we cannot make a decision by looking at whoever says what. If you come to us and prove that the EVMs can be tampered, then the EVMs will not be used in vote.
In a discussion at the National Press Club last Sunday, Sujan Secretary Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder said, regarding EVM, most people including civil society, political parties, and media have raised questions about the transparency of EVM. However, without listening to anyone, the Election Commission announced EVM voting in 150 seats. We do not understand what the commission is doing this for.
In that speech, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder criticized the EVM system and said that the Election Commission says there is no scope of manipulation in EVM. But EVM technology has technical flaws, there are problems. There are concerns about the reliability of elections through EVM technology. It is a weak device. There are also questions about its credibility. Although the control of EVMs is not in the hands of anyone outside, it is in the hands of Election Commission and officials. Commission has lost the trust of people due to the decision of using EVMs in 150 seats.
