Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) has adopted a set of plans to save electricity and fuel costs by following government directives to reduce electricity consumption by 25% and vehicle fuel consumption by 20%, among other directives. These plans were taken in a meeting consisting of university Deans, Directors, Heads of departments, Center Chairman and hall Provosts. Besides, a monitoring team was formed to oversee the power and energy saving activities.
Heads of Departments have been instructed to switch off lights, fans and ACs in all classrooms and Labs and all buildings and offices immediately after class/work to save electricity. Also, the garden lights used for the beautification of the campus and residence halls will be on only once a week. However, security lights and street lights will be switched off daily immediately after Fajr prayers. It has been decided to complete all the work in the campus during daylight hours and to switch off all the lights in the campus. Besides, one of the two lifts of the academic 12-storey building and the lift of the VC office will remain closed. All new AC connections shall be off and existing AC shall be maintained at a minimum of 26°C.
On the other hand, Saturday morning bus trips for staff welfare will be stopped to save fuel. In that case, the afternoon bus trip will leave the campus at 2:30 PM and return from the city to the campus at 8:30 PM. All personal requisitions will be closed on the first and third Saturdays of every month. At the same time, the meeting also decided to limit the use of generators.
