Audio streaming platform Spotify has announced a complete shutdown of streaming services in Russia. The decision was made in response to the country’s new media law. News Engadget.
In a statement, Spotify said it would be shutting down in Russia for an indefinite period. Earlier this month, Spotify closed its office in the country for an indefinite period of time. At that time, the platform stated that it had taken this decision without any persuasion as the reason for the attack on Ukraine.
Spotify said: “It is important to keep some services in Russia for providing reliable, independent news and information. However, the new law, which has “restrictions” on freedom of speech and the collection and dissemination of truthful news, could pose a security threat to our staff and listeners.
Russia’s new law has declared any report that could “disrespect” the actions of the country’s military illegal.
Spotify said services in Russia would be completely shut down in early April.
