Noting that digital tools are increasing day by day, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mostafa Jabbar said the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) does not have the power to remove or lock social media content. So, if we are made responsible for everything, it will be unfair.
The minister made the remarks in a virtual connection at a press conference at the BTRC office on Monday (September 6th) on social media, content and accessories.
BTRC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder presided over the press conference, Secretary of the Department of Posts and Telecommunications Afzal Hossain was connected online. BTRC Vice Chairman Subrata Roy Maitra, Director General (Systems and Services) Brigadier General Nasim Parvez also spoke.
Speaking on the occasion, Mostafa Jabbar said that crime is not committed only by telephone or ISP. Crime is on the rise on the Dark Web. Now the medium of most crime is based on internet. In this case, there is no alternative but to express helplessness. VPN is a great tool for crime. The tools of crime are increasing day by day.
Telecommunications Minister Mostafa Jabbar said, “BTRC can only control telco operators and ISPs. Now offensive websites can be shut down within the Bangladesh border. So; we feel a kind of helplessness with social media, and that’s it. They set community standards just like them, we depend on their will. We have to accept that. We can assure you, there are regular conversations with Facebook. ‘
