Environmental scientist Professor Dr. Salimul Haq has been appointed as an external member of the newly formed Scientific Advisory Council of the United Nations. He was appointed by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, according to a press release.
Dr. Salimul Haque is the Director of the International Center for Climate Change and Development (ICAD) and Professor of the Department of Environmental Science and Management, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB).
According to the UN notification, the newly formed Scientific Advisory Council will work on a hybrid model. One of its main tasks will be to inform the top officials of the UN about the discoveries that are constantly being made in the field of science and technology around the world. They will advise the United Nations on how new discoveries can be used for human welfare. The council will serve as a global hub for the network of scientists spread across the globe.
Professor Dr. Salimul Haque along with Prof. Yoshua Benzio (University of Montreal, Canada), Prof. Sandra Diaz (National University of Córdoba, Argentina), Prof. Fei-Fei Li (Stanford Cosmology, USA), Prof. Alan Lightman (MIT, USA); Professor Thuli Mandonsela (Stellenbosch University, South Africa); and Prof. Thomas C. Sudhoff (Stanford University School of Medicine, USA) are appointed as the external members of this council. All of them are specialized in a variety of disciplines, including climate change and development, computer science, ecology, human-centered artificial intelligence, humanities, law, molecular and cellular physiology.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said this council will help establish the UN as a reliable source of information. This expert team will also advise the senior management council on various issues.
