Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) has announced a budget of Tk. 83 crore 52 lakh for the financial year 2023-24. Out of this, Tk. 79 crore 17 lakh from the Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) and Tk. 4 crore 35 lakh from the university’s own sector have been reported.
The Director (Accounts) Md. Zakir Hossain presented the budget in the 92nd special meeting of the Board of Regents, the highest policy-making forum of JUST, in the conference room of the administrative building of JUST. After presenting the budget, the members of the Board of Regents gave their opinion and recommendations regarding the allocation to various sectors of the university. Later it was unanimously approved by the Board of Regents. Many of the members of the Board of Regents participated virtually and many in person.
In the last financial year, a budget of 85 crore 20 lakh was proposed with a deficit of 45 million taka. However, due to global recession, financial austerity and reduced expenditure from various sectors, the Board of Regents meeting approved a revised budget of Tk. 82 crore 95 lakh in the financial year 2022-23. No deficit has been kept in this year’s announced budget. The JUST Director (Accounts) Md. Zakir Hossain said in his budget speech that the size of the university’s first budget in the financial year 2008-09 was Tk. 1 crore 23 lakh. From there, as the scope of the university gradually increased, the budget increased and now stands at Tk. 83 crore 52 lakh in the financial year 2023-24. He said that in the revised research grant (regular and special) in the financial year 2022-23, Tk. 3 crore 60 lakh has been increased.
After the approval of the budget, the JUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain said, ‘Due to the global recession, the government has to make austerity in various sectors. Yet JUST continues to advance in education and research. University research laboratories are being further modernized. I believe Jashore University of Science and Technology will be more diligent in proper utilization of the proposed budget. At the same time, he sincerely thanked everyone involved in the preparation of the budget.
