The University Grants Commission (UGC) has finalized the budget of 12 thousand 185 crore 33 lakh taka for the 53 public universities of the country for the next financial year 2023-24. Out of this, the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) is getting Tk. 168 crore 36 lakh. Compared to last year, the allocation of the university has increased by Tk. 6 crore 9 lakh.
This allocation was approved last Sunday (May 21) in the 165th full commission meeting chaired by Kazi Shahidullah. On Tuesday (May 23) in the afternoon, the member in charge of the finance and accounting department of UGC, Professor Md. Abu Taher confirmed this information to the media.
Regarding the budget allocated by UGC for the financial year 2023-24, the SUST treasurer Professor Amina Parveen said, ‘The university administration is planning how to manage the various sectors of the university with this budget and how to take the university forward.’
According to the UGC Finance and Accounts Department, Dhaka University has received the highest allocation of Tk. 853 crore 80 lakh among all public universities. Apart from this, Bangladesh Agricultural University among agricultural universities, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology-BUET among technological universities and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University among medical universities have received the most allocation.
In the current fiscal year 2022-23, 9 thousand 265 crore 17 lakh taka has been allocated in the revised budget in favor of 53 public universities. In this case, the allocation for public universities in the financial year 2023-24 has increased by Tk. 2 thousand 920 crores.
Meanwhile, in the fiscal year 2022-23, the allocation for SUST was Tk. 162 crore 27 lakh. According to that, in the financial year 2023-24, the allocation to the university has increased by 6 crore 9 lakh taka.
