On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of receiving the ‘Joliot- Curie’ Medal of Peace by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a discussion meeting was held at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University, Bangladesh (BDU) on Tuesday (May 23, 2023).
The University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Mahfuzul Islam delivered his speech as the chief guest. University Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mahbubul Alam Zoardar and Treasurer Professor Dr. Anwar Hossain spoke as special guests in the discussion meeting.
While speaking as the chief guest, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Mahfuzul Islam said, the ‘Joliot-Curie’ peace medal is given to those who have played a leading role for world peace. On October 10, 1972, in the meeting of the Presidential Committee of the World Peace Council, Ramesh Chandra, Secretary General of the World Peace Council presented a proposal to award the ‘Joliot-Curie’ peace medal in recognition of Bangabandhu’s contribution to the liberation movement of the Bengali nation and world peace. In the presence of 200 representatives of the Peace Council of 140 countries of the world, the decision was taken to award the ‘Joliot-Curie’ Medal of Peace to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu and on May 23, 1973 Bangabandhu was officially given this international award.
While speaking as a special guest, the Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Mahbubul Alam Joarder said, receiving the Joliot-Curie Peace Medal by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman brought the first international honor and first international achievement for independent sovereign Bangladesh. After receiving the ‘Joliot-Curie’ Peace Medal, Bangabandhu became a friend of the world.
While speaking as the special guest, Professor Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain, Treasurer of the University said, the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman worked for the purpose of realizing the rights of the oppressed, suppressed, exploited, deprived people of Bengal. Bangabandhu’s interest in world peace dates back to his student days. Later, he fully entered the field of politics and paid more attention to this. The Peace Medal of the World Peace Council was an international recognition of the deeds and wisdom of the Father of the Nation.
