In some areas of the capital, Tejturi Para, Motijheel, Arambagh, Hazaribagh, Badda, Banashree, Bashundhara Moghbazar, the smell of gas was felt from 11 pm. The city dwellers were worried about this. As the news spread on social media, the city dwellers were afraid of gas accident in the middle of the night.
The smell was said to be coming from a small leak in the Titas Gas line due to excessive gas pressure. However, the fire service advised the city residents not to light the stove without panicking.
On the other hand, due to the shutdown of gas supply to industrial factories during Eid, the concerned ministry has announced that the smell is coming out due to the increase in gas pressure (over-flow) in the transmission and distribution lines. In a verified Facebook post shared by Energy and Power Minister Nasrul Hamid Bipu, it has been informed that Titas Gas’ emergency and technical team is working on the issue. City dwellers are advised not to panic
The news of the gas leak first came from Rampura. When the local residents called the National Emergency Service number 999 and reported the matter, the police went to the spot. According to the police, the smell of gas could be felt on the roads of Rampura’s Mollabari, Rampura Bazar and Taltala areas.
A senior official of Titas Gas said on condition of anonymity that the gas pressure in Dhaka has increased due to the closure of all industrial factories during the Eid holiday. Again, there are small holes in gas lines in many places of Dhaka city. In normal times, gas does not come out through that leakage as the gas pressure is low. Now there may be gas leakage through small holes. Odorants are used to check gas leakage. Recently, the use of odorant was discussed in some places in Dhaka. Maybe the smell is due to the use of deodorant. Earlier gas odorants were not used. Customers can report any complaints related to Titas Gas to 16496.
