ByteDance-owned social media platform TikTok officially formed a ‘Youth Council’ with teenagers to protect younger users. The council consists of 15 teenagers from the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, Indonesia, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Morocco.
TikTok CEO Shou Chiu also held a meeting with the members of this council last February. In that meeting, the youth council wanted to know more about how content reporting and blocking works in the app.
But the news comes as TikTok faces a tough bill in the US, where owner company ByteDance must sell TikTok or face a ban on the app in the country.
Councilors are also currently working on the app’s “Youth Portal” feature, which will provide in-app privacy and security resources, technology site Engadget reported.
According to TikTok, the purpose of the council is to advise on safety policies and issues that often affect teenagers. In addition, the team is also working with Presidio Safeguarding, a UK-based online security company. TikTok also said that this company helped them to be selected and all of them were paid.
