গত বছরের মে মাসে অ্যাপটির পরীক্ষণ কার্যক্রম শুরু হয়। সে সময় এক বিবৃতিতে মাইক্রোসফট জানায়, অডিয়েন্স বা ব্যবহারকারীদের পরিধি বাড়ানোর জন্য নতুন ভার্সন তৈরি করা হয়েছে। আগে উইন্ডোজ ৩২ বিট অ্যাপ, উইন্ডোজ ১০ সিস্টেমের ওয়েব ভার্সন, মেইল ও ক্যালেন্ডার অ্যাপের জন্য এর ব্যবহার সীমিত ছিল। এখন থেকে একই কোডে ক্রস প্লাটফর্মে অ্যাপ ব্যবহার করা যাবে।
যাদের মাইক্রোসফট অ্যাকাউন্ট আছে তারা বিনামূল্যে অ্যাপটি ব্যবহার করতে পারবে, কোনো সাবস্ক্রিপশনের প্রয়োজন হবে না। তবে ইমেইলের সঙ্গে ফাইল পাঠানোর কারণে ওয়ানড্রাইভের স্টোরেজ শেষ হয়ে গেলে সেখানে সাবস্ক্রিপশন করতে হবে।
আউটলুক ইমেইলের নতুন অ্যাপে বেশকিছু ফিচারও রয়েছে। এগুলোর মধ্যে অন্যতম হলো সংবেদনশীল বিষয়ের ইমেইল ব্লক করা। এটি অ্যাপে পপআপ হিসেবে কাজ করবে এবং ব্যবহারকারীকে এসব ইমেইলের বিষয়ে সতর্ক করবে। বিভিন্ন ব্র্যান্ডের জন্য ফিচারটি সহায়ক হবে। বিশেষ করে যারা সংবেদনশীল তথ্য নিয়ে কাজ করে।
