Amazon has announced plans to scale back some of its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, following a similar decision by Meta earlier this week. The news, first reported by Bloomberg, highlights a growing trend among major tech companies revisiting their DEI commitments.
In an internal memo sent to employees, Amazon stated that it is reviewing its current initiatives and intends to discontinue outdated and underperforming programs. Kyndryl Castleberry, a senior executive in Amazon’s HR department, explained in the memo: “Rather than creating separate programs for different groups, we are focusing on efforts with proven outcomes and working to build a truly inclusive culture.”
Amazon’s move aligns with recent actions by other tech giants like Microsoft and Meta, both of which have pulled back from previous DEI commitments. On Friday, The Information reported that Amazon updated its corporate website, reducing DEI-related information and removing a DEI-focused post originally published in 2021.
Bloomberg’s report suggests that tech companies and their leadership are preparing for potential opposition to DEI initiatives from the upcoming U.S. presidential administration.
