Meta is set to display eBay product listings on its Facebook Marketplace platform to address concerns raised by European regulators, according to TechCrunch.
In November, the European Commission (EC) fined Meta €798 million for violating antitrust rules. The EC alleged that Meta linked Facebook Marketplace to its core social network, creating “unfair trading conditions.” This integration reportedly gave Facebook Marketplace a “significant distribution advantage,” while classified sites advertising on Facebook were at a competitive disadvantage. Meta was accused of using data from these competitors to benefit its own Marketplace.
While Meta has stated its intent to appeal the fine, Bloomberg reports that the company is testing a new feature allowing Facebook Marketplace users to browse eBay listings directly. Users will then be able to complete their transactions on eBay’s platform.
The testing phase will include markets in Germany, France, and Meta’s home base in the United States, although the latter falls outside the jurisdiction of European regulators.
Meta’s move appears to be an effort to demonstrate compliance with EU competition rules while enhancing its Marketplace’s user experience.
