YouTube is testing a new floating button called “Play Something” on its Android app. Clicking this button allows YouTube to select and play a video for the user. According to a report by 9to5Google, the button is located just above the app’s bottom bar, as reported by The Verge.
Similar to previous experimental features, this button utilizes the portrait-oriented YouTube Shorts player to play videos, whether they are Shorts or regular YouTube videos. However, users expect the feature to be further refined before its official rollout.
Previously, YouTube experimented with other versions of the feature, including a “Play Something” banner and a simple button resembling a black-and-white YouTube logo. Notably, Netflix introduced a similar feature named “Play Something” in 2021, later renamed “Surprise Me,” before discontinuing it last year.
YouTube’s new feature is anticipated to help users easily discover videos tailored to their preferences.
