WordPress hosting company Automattic announced on Monday its acquisition of WPAI, an AI solutions startup. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, according to TechCrunch.
WPAI’s products include CodeWP, which uses AI to create WordPress plugins; AgentWP, an AI assistant for WordPress site creators; and WP Chat, an AI-powered chatbot that answers WordPress-related questions. However, WPAI has stated that CodeWP and AgentWP will be discontinued and integrated into Automattic’s services.
As part of the acquisition, WPAI’s founding team will join Automattic and lead the development of AI features for WordPress. Automattic stated, “They will work on testing, building, and integrating new AI solutions into the WordPress ecosystem, offering users and developers innovative experiences in their workflows.”
WPAI, in a blog post, announced its commitment to creating AI standards for WordPress, enhancing the platform’s core functionalities, and helping users build and manage their sites more effectively.
This is Automattic’s second acquisition in recent months. Last month, it acquired Harper, a startup specializing in grammar-checking tools.
Meanwhile, Automattic and its CEO Matt Mullenweg are currently involved in legal proceedings with WP Engine. WP Engine has accused Automattic of engaging in anti-competitive practices. In response, Automattic has alleged that WP Engine violated WordPress trademarks and has not contributed significantly to the ecosystem.
