The government of Manipur, India, has extended the suspension of mobile internet services across nine districts until Wednesday, December 3, to maintain law and order. The districts affected are West Imphal, East Imphal, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl, and Jiribam. Earlier plans to restore services on Sunday were revoked following a fresh assessment of the security situation.
Background of the Conflict
The ongoing unrest in Manipur stems from ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which began in May. The violence has resulted in over 250 deaths and the displacement of thousands. Tensions recently escalated in Jiribam after reports of a violent clash between Kuki groups and CRPF personnel, leading to allegations of abduction and murder of six individuals from the Meitei community. This sparked widespread outrage and renewed protests.
Protests and Curfews
Demonstrations demanding justice for the victims have led to attacks on properties of legislators and ministers. Protesters even attempted to storm the residence of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. Authorities have imposed curfews in five districts to curb the violence.
Current State of Connectivity
While broadband internet services were partially restored on November 19 as the situation appeared to stabilize, mobile internet remains suspended to prevent the spread of inflammatory content and misinformation.
