Sony is reportedly developing a new handheld gaming console capable of running PlayStation 5 (PS5) games natively, according to Bloomberg News. Unlike the PlayStation Portal, released last year as a remote-play device reliant on Wi-Fi, this new device is expected to operate without internet connectivity, setting it apart as a standalone console.
The project is still in its early stages, and sources caution that Sony could shelve the initiative before release. If brought to market, the console could directly compete with popular handhelds like the Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and Asus ROG Ally. Speculation about Microsoft developing an Xbox handheld further underscores the growing demand for portable gaming solutions.
This new console would offer a fully portable PS5 gaming experience, removing the limitations of remote play and marking Sony’s potential return to the handheld gaming space after the PlayStation Vita.
Though several years away from launch, anticipation is already building among gamers. If successful, the device could significantly reshape the landscape of handheld gaming and reignite Sony’s presence in the market.
