The Tanzanian government has directed the country’s communication regulatory authority to suspend the online platform of a local media company for 30 days. This action has been taken due to the publication of anti-government content, according to Reuters.
The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) announced that it has suspended the online content license of Mwananchi Communications for the next 30 days. The media outlet is accused of publishing content on October 1 that undermined the country’s image.
The regulatory body stated that the audiovisual content published on social media platforms violated Tanzania’s Online Content Regulation of 2020. However, the specific details of the content in question were not disclosed.
The media outlet had shared an animated video on its social media, depicting a woman watching television, where relatives and friends of missing or murdered individuals were making allegations.
Although the video has since been removed, the media outlet is not escaping the regulatory agency’s penalties.
