Three Iranian nationals have been accused of carrying out a cyber attack on U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump’s election campaign. Federal prosecutors in the United States have filed charges based on these allegations, according to reports from The New York Times.
In this election cycle, various forms of attacks have become a prominent issue. There have been at least two attempts to target Trump, who has raised concerns about hacking attempts on his campaign data during speeches across different states. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has now formally accused three Iranian citizens of orchestrating a cyber attack.
The charges state that for nearly a year, the accused, along with others allegedly associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, had been planning the attacks. They are accused of stealing sensitive information from Trump’s campaign, which was subsequently shared with several journalists and individuals linked to Democratic campaign strategies.
In addition to Iran, the U.S. has also accused Russia and China of attempting to interfere in the presidential election. However, both Moscow and Beijing have denied these allegations.
