China’s ByteDance is working with US chip designer Broadcom to develop advanced AI processors. The move will help TikTok’s ownership company secure high-quality chip supplies amid US-China tensions, two sources close to the matter said so. News Reuters.
Both companies apparently see no problem with 5-nanometer application-specific integrated chips (ASICs) complying with US export restrictions. And the manufacturing work will reportedly be outsourced to Taiwan’s TSMC.
There is no official announcement from either company to develop 5 nanometer or more advanced technology yet. The excitement is mainly about less sophisticated technology.
ByteDance already has a business partnership with Broadcom. If the new news turns out to be true, the supply of high-quality chips at low cost will surely be easier.
Sources say that it cannot be said for sure that chip production will start this year. Design work is ongoing but production is yet to begin.
