Bangladesh has dropped 14 steps in the United Nations index of modern technology use. Bangladesh ranks 126th out of 166 countries in UNCTAD’s Frontier Technologies Index with a score of 0.28. But in 2021, the position of Bangladesh was 112.
The United Nations Organization for Trade and Development published this position in 5 sub-indicators of information and communication technology, skills, research and development, industry and finance. The report ranked Bangladesh 148th in modern technology applications ranging from blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) to Internet of Things (IoT) and virtual reality (VR), 131st in efficiency, 67th in research and development, 135th in industry and 90th in financial sub-indices.
According to the report, Bangladesh is only above Afghanistan in the index among South Asian countries. As usual, India is at the forefront. Its ranking was 43rd, 46th in 2021. It is followed by Sri Lanka at 89 and Nepal at 106, Bhutan at 116, Pakistan at 125 and Afghanistan at 164.
The top ten countries in the list are USA, Sweden and Singapore, Switzerland, Netherlands, South Korea, Germany, Finland, Hong Kong and Belgium respectively.
According to the report, China has become the world’s technology superpower by leading in fields such as defense, aerospace, robotics, energy, environment, biotechnology, artificial intelligence (AI), advanced materials and quantum technology. China dominates technologies related to drones, machine learning, electric batteries, nuclear power, photovoltaics, quantum sensors and complex mineral extraction.
According to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s Critical Technology Tracker, the world’s top 10 research institutes for certain technologies are located in China. That’s what it says. By comparison, the United States tops only seven areas of complex technology.
