The government has launched a hotline to help families access information about incarcerated relatives. On Sunday, January 26, the service was inaugurated at the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj by Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Md. Motaher Hossain was also present at the event.
Speaking after the inauguration, the Home Affairs Advisor stated, “Through this hotline, families will be able to access updates about prisoners, and the service will remain operational at all times.”
The hotline number, 09612021690, will provide information about inmates in all 68 prisons across the country. Explaining its benefits, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury added, “Using this number, families can obtain details about a prisoner’s location, court appearance dates, visitation schedules, phone call dates, physical health status, and parole-related information. Additionally, complaints or suggestions can be submitted through this service.”
Responding to a question, the advisor remarked, “We do not deny that snatching and extortion exist. However, those involved are being caught. Unfortunately, some who are released also return to such activities. We are making every effort to reduce snatching and extortion, one way or another.”
Addressing another query, he said, “There is no shortage of police, but their enthusiasm for work is not the same as before. We are working to reignite their motivation to perform better.”
