At Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj, activists of the banned student organization Chhatra League reportedly attacked coordinators of the July Movement while chanting the slogan “Joy Bangla.” The attack left coordinators Jashim, Omar Sharif, and Sakib Ahmed injured.
According to witnesses, during the incident, Chhatra League activists also targeted journalists, including Russell Hossain, the Amar Desh correspondent, and Atik Faisal, who were performing their professional duties. Allegedly, the attack occurred in the presence of a member of the university’s proctorial body.
The incident unfolded at around 2 PM on Saturday, January 25, in front of the university’s administrative building.
Eyewitnesses reported that Sohaag, a history department student and Chhatra League affiliate opposing the July Movement, was detained by general students when he appeared for an exam. Other Chhatra League activists then launched an attack to free him, allegedly chanting slogans during the altercation.
Coordinator Jashim Uddin, one of the victims, stated, “Sohaag, a banned Chhatra League member, continued to exert dominance on campus even after August 5. Today, when he came for an exam, general students detained him, but Chhatra League activists attacked us and freed him. We demand justice and have already spoken to the proctor about taking action against them.”
Regarding the incident, Dr. Ariful Zaman Rajib, the university proctor, said, “I have called a meeting at 7 PM to discuss the matter. I will comment after consulting everyone.”
Notably, Sohaag has faced multiple allegations in the past, including harassing general students and journalists. This latest attack has sparked widespread outrage among students and members of the press at the university.
