The students of Rangamati Science and Technology University (RMSTU) have announced a shutdown of the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) Office following the expiration of their three-day ultimatum. As part of their protest, they began demonstrations and sit-ins on campus at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
According to their declared plan, the students will initiate a “Long March to the DC Office” at 11 a.m., followed by a sit-in and the shutdown of the DC Office at 12 p.m.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, January 8, the students stated that the university has been functioning without a Vice-Chancellor (VC) since August 18 of last year, when the former VC resigned under pressure from student demands. Since then, no new VC has been appointed, leaving multiple issues and demands of the students unresolved.
On January 6, the students organized a protest march and road blockade in Banarupa, Rangamati. Following assurances from the authorities, the students withdrew their road blockade, giving a 72-hour ultimatum for the appointment of a VC. However, as the deadline passed without any progress, they declared their new set of programs.
Students from various departments shared that Thursday’s activities began with protest marches and sit-ins on campus from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Subsequently, at 11 a.m., they plan to march to the DC Office, and at 12 p.m., initiate a shutdown and sit-in at the office premises.
Despite the growing protests, no statement has been issued by the university administration or other relevant authorities regarding the matter.
The students remain adamant about their demands, stating that the prolonged lack of a Vice-Chancellor has stalled essential administrative and academic activities, further exacerbating their frustrations.
