The role of journalists has become increasingly critical in ensuring the public receives accurate and timely information, according to Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md. Nahid Islam. He made these remarks during a discussion with a delegation from the Dhaka Sub-Editors’ Council on Tuesday (December 24) at the Secretariat’s Department of Posts and Telecommunications.
Highlighting the importance of objective journalism, the adviser emphasized the need for verifying the accuracy of information before publishing news. “In this age of information technology, combating rumors and misinformation is a major challenge. Sub-editors play a crucial role in overcoming this challenge,” he stated, urging them to exercise greater responsibility in the editing process.
Md. Nahid Islam further mentioned that the government has already established the Media Reform Commission to strengthen the country’s media sector. He encouraged sub-editors to submit specific reform proposals to the commission. Addressing the issue of fair wages in the media industry, the adviser assured that the government would take necessary measures to implement the Wage Board.
During the meeting, the leaders of the Dhaka Sub-Editors’ Council stressed the need for discipline in the promotion process of sub-editors and called for contemporary training programs to enhance their skills. They also requested government intervention to expedite the implementation of the Wage Board.
