Chittagong University (CU) students have accused a Facebook page named “Crush and Confession” of engaging in online bullying targeting female students. The accusations prompted a protest under the banner of BRF Youth Club on Saturday at 12:30 PM at the university’s Buddijibi Chattar, where the students demanded justice for the victims.
According to the students, the page posts photos of female students without their consent, often accompanied by humorous or derogatory remarks, leading to uncomfortable situations for those targeted.
Antor Safiullah, the president of BRF Youth Club’s CU chapter, stated, “Taking personal photos without consent violates privacy rights and constitutes a legal offense. While everyone has the freedom to express their feelings, this freedom does not extend to intruding on others’ personal spaces and making a mockery of it. These pages not only bully our female peers but also promote obscenity.”
Nawshin Nawal Fatima, a sociology student, commented, “Crush and Confession pages are platforms for criminal activities. Both those creating such content and those enabling it are equally culpable. Certain individuals on campus and on shuttle trains frequently engage in this offensive behavior. It’s acceptable to express one’s feelings openly, but anonymously taking random photos to harass others is unacceptable. While some conscious individuals discourage this behavior, others shamelessly tag the victims and add inappropriate comments.”
Sakib Ahmed, a student from the Institute of Education and Research, noted, “These pages infringe on personal freedom and create insecurity, especially for female students from rural backgrounds.”
The protesting students have called for strict action against such activities to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all.
